At the EU-China summit in Beijing this week, EU president Tusk made clear that “rule-based international order is in our common interest”, underlining the importance of collaboration in tackling global issues. There was candid discussion over Europe’s steel industry, market economy status for China and human rights, and the EU deficit on trade in goods (EUR 180 bn in 2015). But as two of the three biggest economies in the world, the EU and China share a strong interest in comprehensive partnership.
